This area is dominated by Mount Egmont(Mt Taranaki)which is 2518 metres high. Taranaki is predominantly a dairy farming area producing some of the countries finest cheese. It also produces the vast majority of New Zealands gas and oil in its on and off-shore fields.

The beaches in Taranaki are rugged but have some of the best surfing and windsurfing in the country.
