Palmerston North and Wanganui are the two principal cities in this area.

Palmerston North is a city that has grown from agricultural roots.Massey University is a leading agricultural researc centre .Palmerston North is also home to much of the countries Military, with an army camp at Linton and an aiforce base at Ohakea. 'Palmy' has New Zealands biggest 'Wind Farm' that is situated on the Tararua ranges on the outskirts of the city.

Wanganui (the River City) is one of the oldest provincial cities.On the banks of the Whanganui River, near the coast, Wanganui with a population of 40,000, is a pretty city with lovely parks and gardens.The river attracts many visitors. Visitors can take tours  that stretch 200 kilometres up the historic river.
