Roughly the size of Great Britain or the State of Colorado. New Zealand consists of two main Islands, The North Island and the South Island, with a multitude of smaller Islands surrounding these two.

It is a country dominated by picturesque mountains, beautiful lakes and lush forests. It has a wonderful array of scenery in such a small area.

The North Island was formed by volcanic activity with a few volcanoes still active. Mount Ruapehu the largest erupted in 1997 and still continues to throw out rocks and ash. It is also New Zealand's favorite  ski area.

Due to the volcanic activity there are also vast areas of geothermal activity especially between the two cities of Taupo and Rotorua. Here  you can visit steaming mud pools and spectacular geysers. Taupo is a town dominated by Lake Taupo which is a crater formed by a massive volcanic explosion centuries ago.

The South Island in dominated by the Southern Alps which is a mountain range running the length of the South Island. Its highest peak is Mt Cook(3760metres).

Although dominated by the Southern Alps the South Island has a diverse range of landscape and has is thought the more pituresque of the two main islands.
