Buried Village offers a first hand insight into the devastation,
chaos and mayhem that transpired on the night of June 10, 1886,
when Mount Tarawera erupted entombing hundreds of the local
people, and obliterating the pink and white terraces, once
considered to be the eighth wonder of the world.
Visitors are able to walk through the remains of the buried
village which still lies partially buried in the volcanic mud and
ash.
The museum houses remnanats and artifacts recovered from the
rubble offers a real emotional insight into the terror of the
night and showcases magnificently life at the village, before,
during and after this monumental event.
Enjoy a peaceful stroll through pristine native bush and gaze in
awe at the giant wild trout that inhabit the beautiful stream of
Te Wairoa.
